For the very first associate spotlight series of 2021, we wanted to talk about Cindy Allen! Cindy has been apart of the SpendMend team for 14 years and is one of the most caring people you will ever come across. Although Cindy has worked at SpendMend for over 14 years, she said it doesn’t seem like it’s been that long at all. Cindy has been a true leader here and she really goes above and beyond when it comes to giving back to the community. She is very compassionate and whether it’s the Kid’s Food Basket or Toys for Tots, Cindy has always been heavily involved in SpendMend’s community outreach, spending a ton of time and energy giving back! If you would like to know how you can help with community outreach, Cindy is a great person to ask! Rob Heminger talked about Cindy’s leadership skills stating, “Similar to some of the most successful SpendMend Associates, Cindy has proven herself successful in multiple positions within the organization.  That diversified experience, coupled with a result oriented/goal driven approach has served her well…positioning Cindy as a leader reliable in the most challenging of situations.” We are very proud to have Cindy on our team and appreciate everything that she does. Thank you, Cindy!

Interview with Cindy:

What is your role at SpendMend?

Shared Services Manager

How long have you been with SpendMend?

14 years

How did you first learn about SpendMend?

I was contacted through Michigan Talent Bank when my prior employer moved out of the state.

What 3 words would you use to describe SpendMend?

Thorough, Motivated, and Family

Why do you look forward to coming to work?

With the rapid expansion of the company, it’s always something new. I enjoy being involved with process improvement and implementation.

Before working at SpendMend, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

Scheduling at Baker Furniture

What is one fun fact about you?

I love doing anything that involves other people and helping others. My motto in life is the more the merrier.

What type of music or podcasts do you listen to during the workday?

I typically start off the day with Praise and Worship music and then switch over to R&B in the afternoon.

Do you have any hobbies or participate in any activities outside of work?

I enjoy cooking and making Shadow boxes. I’m not a very crafty person in general but I really enjoy putting together pictures and memories for other people.

Can you describe an interaction when you helped a client or a supplier that stands out in your mind?

In the 14 years I’ve been with SpendMend, most of my years were spent creating and maintaining relationships. I served as the “middle-man” with assisting with open A/R. Even with being in my current role, I’m still contacted for assistance and enjoy helping out!

What was the best compliment you’ve ever been paid by a client or supplier?

I was told by a client that they were happy with how quickly I was able to get resolution on their pricing claims.

Can you describe one of your fondest memories from the past 14 years with SpendMend?

My most memorable moment with SpendMend was the first 5K I participated in for Breast Cancer.  Showing up to the event and seeing how many employees, spouses, children, and friends were there to support the cause was astounding.  I always knew the company was family oriented but seeing it in action took it to another level.  This function alone, from fundraising to participating, was my motivation to giving back to the community and we kept the snacks going at the office for nonprofit donations.

Would you like to give a shout out to a client or supplier?

I would like to give a shout out to James Mallon, Finance Manager at Kaiser Permanente. I’ve been working with James for years on Kaiser pricing and he’s actively involved and a pleasure to work with.

What is the best part of serving the healthcare market?

I’ve learned a lot about healthcare over the years. When I first started at SpendMend, I had no idea what to expect. While working here, I gained a better understanding of the products, what they’re used for and alternatives. It’s very important to understand the audit side, but it’s equally important to relate to the suppliers. Relationships are key for our industry.

What is your favorite Recovery Room Activity?

Definitely Ping-Pong!

What has been your experience with SpendMend community service events?

When we were at the office, I kept the snacks full and each Quarter we donated the proceeds to Kids Food Basket. I look forward to starting this back up again.

What is your favorite in house event? (specific potluck, chili cook-off, bring your kid to work day, etc.)

The chili cook-offs are always a good time and a lot of people participate.

Do you want to shout out a co-worker who has helped or inspired you at SpendMend?

I would like to give a shout out to Dennis McFadden. When I first took over the Shared Services role, I spent hours of training with him and I couldn’t have taken on the role without him.

What advice do you have for perspective candidates who want to join the SpendMend team?

If you’re eager to learn in a fast-paced atmosphere this is definitely the company for you.

What has been your proudest accomplishment at SpendMend?

When we went remote in March of 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, over half of my staff wasn’t set up to work remote. I worked directly with IT to change our processes and everyone was remote and productive within a 2 week timeframe.

What is something you’re looking forward to for your future at SpendMend?

I look forward to growing along with company and new opportunities.
