This week we are doing our spotlight post on Felicity Homsted! Felicity is a new member of the SpendMend family after the recent acquisition of Turnkey Pharmacy Solutions. We hope that this piece helps everyone get to know Felicity a little bit better and sheds some light on who she is as a person. It became clear after the interview that Felicity is a very interesting and outgoing person. It’s not everyday you talk to someone who graduated from Pharmacy school and High school twice or was on the cover of a published calendar! We are so excited to work with Felicity and to see what the future holds! Welcome to the team, Felicity!

Interview with Felicity

What is your role at SpendMend?

Director of Research and Education / Lead Pharmacist Auditor SpendMend Pharmacy Division

How did you first learn about SpendMend?

When Turnkey Pharmacy Solutions and Elevate 340B joined the SpendMend business family last week!

Why do you look forward to coming to work?

I love the new challenges each day brings! Working with health systems across the country, learning from them and helping them improve their systems and compliance. It is so rewarding to know that the work we do helps the health care systems we work with better serve their communities.

Before working at SpendMend, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

This is tough! I was born on Prince Edward Island, home of Anne of Green Gables. I worked in the Anne of Green Gables Store and Tea Room, getting to wear full period costume every day and even graced the cover the official calendar that year!

What is one fun fact about you?

These are good questions! I graduated from both High School and Pharmacy School twice, each in two different countries.

What type of music or podcasts do you listen to during the workday?

I am not good at listening and working, but out-side of work I am constantly listening to books. Mostly suspense with some Rom-Coms (or Chick-Lit as I like to call it) mixed in. I love to discover new authors and series.

Do you have any hobbies or participate in any activities outside of work?

My husband and I have a hobby farm. Two pigs, three emus, four ducks, and lots of chickens! With our two kids, two dogs, garden which always seems to need to be weeded, and brood of critters we stay pretty busy! We are the neighborhood's unofficial petting zoo!

Can you describe an interaction when you helped a client or a supplier that stands out in your mind?

340B audits are always tough, especially the first time a client has one. You are getting to know each other’s programs and companies. One of my favorite audits was with a client in Northeast Missouri. It was their first audit and there were many things going well and some areas for improvement. The whole team was forth coming about their processes, both good and not so good. They really wanted to maximize their learning during the audit and improve their program. Within a couple hours we felt like one single team, all pulling together in the same direction. After the audit, we continued working together through challenges and it is so rewarding to see their program thriving.

What was the best compliment you’ve ever been paid by a client or supplier?

Recently we did a unique audit, the healthcare system requesting the audit had a number of other member participant healthcare systems who were required to participate. One of the other systems had concerns since they had not engaged us directly and they were hesitant to participate in the audit. After a few meetings and emails, we were able to address the hospitals concerns to enable their participation in the audit. At the end, the hospital reached out directly and let me know they were so happy with the work we had done for the previous audit that they wanted to engage us for their full annual audit. It was a delicate situation to navigate but at the end of the day we were able to build strong relationships and demonstrate the value of engaging the SpendMend (TPS) Pharmacy for 340B audit services.

Would you like to give a shout out to a client or supplier?

Oh Man! Picking favorites! Shout out to all the covered entities who are working hard every day to improve their 340B programs, Catawba Valley Medical Center, Nevada Health Centers, and Memorial Healthcare System to name a few!

What is the best part of serving the healthcare market?

At the start of my career, I worked in direct patient care and there was no better feeling than knowing that something you did made a patient's life better. Now working with health systems, I love knowing that the work we do helps ensure that our clients have systems in place to deliver great care.

What is your favorite in house event?

Working from home, every day is bring your dogs to work day! They have their own special filing cabinet with treats which comes in handy during Zoom meetings when they will not settle.

Do you want to shout out a co-worker who has helped or inspired you at SpendMend?

Jennifer Hagen and Chelsea Magee! I couldn't pick one. Both of these ladies are amazing and talented! We are so lucky to have them on our team.

What advice do you have for perspective candidates who want to join the SpendMend team?

The work we do is fast-paced and requires a high level of self-motivation and drive for constant growth and improvement. We are a continuously growing family of talented individuals, everyone with their own niche. I could not think of a better place to work.

What made you want to have a career in healthcare/pharmacy?

I happened into pharmacy by a stroke of luck. I was leaning towards being an accountant, but I am dyslexic, so that seemed a poor choice. My dad and I were sitting at the kitchen table and he was flipping through a newspaper, suggesting possible careers based on job listings. The local hospital was hiring pharmacist and he said he thought I would enjoy that. I considered the idea for a minute and was sold. Within a month I was enrolled in my prerequisite courses and the rest is history! I have never regretted the choice for a second.
